  28. 1) CD-ROM / Video Performance Problems
  29. ================================================

  31. NOTE: To avoid damage to the CD-ROM, do not remove it from
  32. your CD-ROM drive while it is in use (usually indicated by
  33. a light on the CD-ROM drive).
  34.  
  35. You might be able to enhance video playback performance in 
  36. a number of ways:
  37.  
  38. 1.  If your computer has only 4 Megabytes of memory, you should
  39. consider purchasing an additional 4 Megabytes for a total
  40. of 8 Megabytes.  Additional memory will significantly 
  41. increase performance for all applications on your system.
  42.  
  43. 2.  Increase the amount of buffer memory that your CD-ROM 
  44. driver software uses.  Most computers communicate with the 
  45. CD-ROM drive through the Microsoft MSCDEX driver.  Such 
  46. systems can sometimes be accelerated by adding /M:32 to the 
  47. MSCDEX entry in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  See your CD-ROM 
  48. documentation for more details.

  50. 3.  Ensure that you are using the latest video driver for your 
  51. video board.  Contact your video board manufacturer for more 
  52. information.  You might also be able to get updated drivers from 
  53. CompuServe in either the Microsoft forum or in a forum managed 
  54. by your video board manufacturer.  Also see the \DRIVERS 
  55. directory on this CD-ROM for a number of Microsoft-provided 
  56. video drivers.

  58. 4.  Check Windows Setup (usually in the Main group of the 
  59. Windows Program Manager) to ensure that you are using a 256 
  60. color video driver.  Video playback is slower in both 16 color
  61. mode and any video mode with more than 256 colors.  Video 
  62. performance might also be improved by running Windows 
  63. in 640 by 480 resolution if you are currently using a higher 
  64. resolution.

  67. 2) Video Display Problems
  68. ================================================

  70. 1.  16 color mode
  71. This application runs in 16 color mode but, due to the full-motion
  72. video playback, we strongly suggest using a 256 color video mode.
  73. Many computers are factory-set to a 16 color mode although the 
  74. video board is capable of 256 colors.  The setup program should 
  75. correctly warn you if you are in 16 color mode and suggest 
  76. a remedy.

  78. 2.  ATI video boards
  79. This product is incompatible with some features of the ATI
  80. Mach32 video system.  This video board comes with a number of
  81. popular systems including most Gateway 2000 machines.  The 
  82. problem is not with the board itself but with the Mach32 video 
  83. driver software so it can be resolved in at least two different
  84. ways (note that suggestion #1 will provide the best performance):
  85.  
  86. A.  Run the ATI Control Panel application that comes with your
  87. video board.  
  88.     i.  Ensure that you are running in the 256 color mode.
  89.     ii.  Click Advanced Features and ensure that the 256 
  90.         Color Palette option is turned ON.  See the 
  91.         ATI documentation for more details.

  93. B.  From the Windows Setup application, choose a different video 
  94. driver such as the 8514/a driver.  See your ATI documentation 
  95. for more details.

  98. 3) Audio Problems
  99. ================================================

  101. This application requires that an MPC-compatible sound board 
  102. is installed in order to play sound.  It will not function with
  103. software that uses the computer's internal speaker to generate 
  104. sound (such as "PC Speaker").  Such software will usually
  105. not play any sounds but could cause your system to crash.
  106.  
  107. To resolve other audio problems:
  108.  
  109. 1.  Make sure that the volume for your speakers is set to an 
  110. audible level.
  111.  
  112. 2.  Your sound board may be set up incorrectly if you still do not 
  113. hear any audio.  Check to see that the audio driver that came
  114. with your sound board is installed correctly and, if necessary, 
  115. reinstall it.  See the documentation that came with your sound
  116. board for more details.

  120. 4) "Out of Memory" Problems
  121. ================================================
  122.  
  123. This application uses your computer's memory to display 
  124. pictures and video.  Performance will be degraded if your system
  125. does not have enough free memory.  If you receive Out-Of-Memory 
  126. errors, you probably do not have enough free memory. Consider 
  127. doing the following:
  128.  
  129. 1.  Close all unnecessary applications.
  130.  
  131. 2.  If you are running Windows in Enhanced mode (the default 
  132. mode if you are running Windows on a 386 or better machine), 
  133. create a permanent swap file on your hard disk.  See your 
  134. Windows documentation details.

  138. 5) Windows NT
  139. ================================================
  140. The Microsoft Video for Windows drivers that this 
  141. product uses may run on Microsoft Windows NT 
  142. version 3.5 or later.  If they do not, you will 
  143. need to run this product on Microsoft Windows 3.x.
